Sutra on the Difficulty of Repaying the Kindness of Parents
Khenpo Sodargye expounds on this sutra, primarily elucidating that parents' profound kindness is difficult to repay. In the sutra, the Buddha teaches that even carrying one's father on the right shoulder and mother on the left shoulder for a thousand years would still be insufficient to repay their kindness. There are five genuine methods of repaying this debt: enabling parents to develop faith, receive precepts, hear the Dharma, practice generosity, and cultivate wisdom. Children should guide their parents to take refuge in the Three Jewels and practice virtuous deeds. Monastics have two identities and should learn to teach the Dharma, nurturing more disciples. In essence, one must be filial to parents while also helping them through Buddhist teachings.
