Extraordinary Words 11 What Matters Most for Liberation?
In this session of "Extraordinary Words," Khenpo Sodargye opens with a poignant reflection on the swift passage of time, noting how quickly years slip by. He shares a touching story of His Holiness quietly agreeing to accept a disciple who had little time left. Drawing on the wisdom of Patrul Rinpoche, Khenpo challenges practitioners to ask honestly whether what they are studying is truly the most essential for liberation — including whether elderly students, for instance, really need to study Buddhist Logic. He then turns to the serious pitfalls of Dharma hearing: one must listen not merely to accumulate intellectual knowledge, but in order to mature one's own mindstream. Khenpo warns against the particular danger of developing pride and arrogance after gaining learning, citing stories from Words of My Perfect Teacher about scholars who mocked others and ultimately fell into lower realms. He also discusses the double-edged quality of Dharma study: while some practitioners genuinely benefit and increase virtue, others develop more elaborate faults, broken samayas, and self-justifying rationalization. The session ends with a sober reminder that without pure perception of one's teachers and Dharma friends, the path becomes truly dangerous.
