The Sutra of Great Liberation
The Sutra of Great Liberation L27 27
In this session, Khenpo Sodargye leads a nuanced exploration of the Buddha’s thirty-two marks and the paradox of emptiness. Drawing from classic texts and personal anecdotes, he unpacks how the deepest wisdom is not about denying the world, but about seeing through its illusions while still engaging with its realities. The teaching moves between rigorous analysis and everyday examples—contrasting the clarity of a mind untouched by distraction with the confusion of modern life. Through stories of ancient masters, the role of language, and the importance of daily practice, this talk invites us to reflect on how genuine insight is not found in grand gestures, but in the persistent effort to balance understanding and action, emptiness and compassion.
Teachings by Khenpo Sodargye. The Sutra of Great Liberation is a profound scripture taught by the Buddha near the time of his parinirvana. It is treasured in nearly every Tibetan household, where it is commonly recited for 49 days to help the deceased attain liberation. The sutra is filled with the sacred names of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and merely hearing or reciting them brings inconceivable merit. Khenpo Sodargye was deeply moved since childhood by witnessing a kind elderly man devotedly reciting this sutra daily, thus forming a profound connection with it. Through confession and practice of this sutra, one can purify negative karma and attain Buddhahood—it is truly an extraordinary path to liberation.
