The Shurangama Sutra L54 Spontaneous Inner Light
In this session of the Shurangama Sutra, Khenpo Sodargye continues the teaching on the interchangeability of the six faculties in sages, explaining that when all six sense objects dissolve into non-dual wisdom, the sage's inner luminosity arises spontaneously without any dependence on external light — a state illustrated with stories of eminent monks throughout Chinese Buddhist history. He then introduces the key insight that once the physical faculties naturally disappear, the primordial wisdom of the Tathagatagarbha operates completely freely. The session then moves to Ananda's profound question: if the Buddha has said the six faculties are the root of bondage in samsara, yet also the tools for liberation, how can both be true? And if we already possess the Tathagatagarbha, which is indestructible like a vajra, why are we still bound? The Buddha's reply is characteristically direct: Ananda is highly learned but has not yet put an end to his outflows. Liberation is not achieved through hearing alone. The session closes with the Buddha beginning a sustained investigation of the nature of hearing itself, using the sound of a conch shell to confront Ananda with the question: when the sound stops and you say there is no sound, does your capacity for hearing also stop?
