A Journey to the West L68 Why Wealth and Power Cannot Bring Genuine Happiness
In this teaching, Khenpo Sodargye deeply examines the First Noble Truth—the Truth of Suffering. He elucidates His Holiness’s unvarnished truth that all of samsara, regardless of status or location, is akin to a fire pit devoid of genuine happiness. Looking closely at human existence, Khenpo traces the pervasive suffering of physical illness, mental torment, and the relentless pursuit of wealth and power. He points out that the accumulation of wealth involves three painful stages: the hardship of earning it, the constant anxiety of protecting it, and the suffering of never being satisfied. Similarly, individuals in high offices are plagued by the dual torment of craving further advancement while simultaneously fearing a sudden downfall. Ultimately, reflecting on the absolute impermanence at the time of death, where all possessions and relations must be abandoned, Khenpo emphasizes that practicing contentment and letting go of unnecessary social distractions are the true keys to inner peace.
