The Vimalakirti Sutra
The Vimalakirti Sutra L13 The main speaker of this session is Khenpo Sodargye Why Your Body Isn't Who You Are: Beyond Beauty and Aging
In this session, Khenpo Sodargye opens with a call for consistency and integrity in voluntary service, noting that a person's true character is revealed when no one is watching. He then admonishes practitioners to treat each class as a precious opportunity, not to be taken lightly. The main teaching returns to the Buddha's systematic analysis of the body in the Vimalakīrti Sutra. Khenpo explains that the body arises from interdependent conditions like an echo in a valley—a union of past karma, parental seed, and the four elements—none of which constitute a fixed, independent self. Drawing on multiple metaphors, he shows the body to be as fleeting as clouds and lightning, as ownership-less as the earth, and as impure as its biological origins. He discusses society's obsession with youth and fitness, contrasting this with the Buddhist understanding of the body as a calamity. He cites classical sources on impermanence and explains that even sudden death statistics confirm how fragile human life truly is. The teaching builds toward a decisive conclusion: since the body is empty, impure, and will ultimately belong to vultures, practitioners should generate revulsion toward it and aspiration for the Buddha's Dharma body—which arises from the six paramitas, the four immeasurables, the thirty-seven factors of awakening, and accumulations over countless lives. The session closes with the teaching that Vimalakīrti's illness itself became a means of guiding innumerable beings to generate bodhicitta.
